After class, Ellie stopped at JGOB to purchase a cupcake for herself. After all, today was her birthday. Why not indulge a little in baked goods? It wasn't just any birthday. She could now vote if she wanted to. It also meant she was more likely to be even more responsible in a legal sense. Was she now responsible for the house in Encino? Was she going to be an actual legal guardian of Chuck? Yes, these were things she was thinking about.

For now, she sat on her bed, stuck a candle in the cupcake, and made a wish. Then she stared at the phone in the hopes that maybe one her parents remembered what day it was. It was a long shot, she knew. But it was a wish she didn't want to give up on.

[door and post open; if anyone wants to visit because it's her birthday, feel free somehow knowing it. :)]

Ellie knew what today was. It was just another good excuse to call home. She settled on her bed, grabbed her new cellphone (not nearly as clunky as her older mid-90s style), and dialed home.

"Hey Chuck," she said into the phone. "Is Dad there?...Oh, he isn't? Do you know when he'll be back? Yeah, I know. Nothing to worry about."

She frowned slightly, trying not to sound too disappointed. "He'll come back eventually. He always does. Just...tell him I called, okay?"

After talking to her brother a little longer, she hung up the phone and sighed. She really should stop thinking she can rely on either of her parents, especially when her dad was more and more flaky. She just hoped he wouldn't leave for good the way her mother did.

Ellie was sitting in her alcove, thinking about the things she learned in class today. Like how her brother will possibly date her teacher in the future. It had taken every ounce of self-restraint not to ask Sarah if there was anyone special in her life. Was Ellie married or engaged to someone? Was she a doctor in the future? But she didn't ask.

After thinking about all that she reached for her cellphone and called home. It had been a few days so it was time to check on her little brother.

"Hey Chuck," she said into the phone. She went on to tell him that the school was nice, that she was making friends already, and that everything was a normal as could be. Hey, that last part could count as her Spy Games assignment. Telling a lie and seeing how it felt. She decided it didn't feel very good to lie to her brother. If she told the truth, though, he'd think she was crazy. That would be worse than the lie.
